The pulp of your tooth is extremely important. It contains the nerve tissue and the blood vessels that connect your tooth to your jaw. If that pulp becomes infected because your tooth has been compromised by damage and decay, you will know it, as you may experience swelling and pain.
In such a case, your dentist will recommend a root canal. Many people panic when they hear those words, but the truth is that a root canal can save a tooth, that in the past would have needed an extraction. Although the pulp is important, your tooth can survive without it.
In a root canal, the dentist will use a small drill to access the pulp. The dentist will remove the pulp, and then clean and sterilize the pulp chamber. The dentist may have to enlarge the pulp chamber since he will replace the missing pulp with a rubbery material called gutta percha. The dentist will then seal your tooth with a temporary filling. You will return to the office for a follow-up exam,and for a permanent crown. If your dentist prescribes an antibiotic or pain-reliever, be sure to follow his instructions regarding your medication. With proper brushing and flossing and regular visits to your dentist, your tooth should last a lifetime.
