If you are looking for diet recommendations in Morton, Illinois, and to know more about how your diet affects your oral health, we welcome you to call us at 309-866-3026 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Ronald Ranson and Dr. Leticia Fernandez-Ranson today.

Many people are unaware at how directly related their diet and oral health really are. A balanced, nutritious diet can greatly influence your oral health for good, and a poor diet can do the opposite. Avoiding sugary or acidic foods and carbohydrates can give your mouth an added level of protection against tooth decay, infection, and other problems. At our practice, we want to help you maintain a healthy smile and lifestyle. To help your diet be more beneficial to your oral health, we recommend following these simple tips:

  • Brush your teeth soon after eating sugary or acidic foods. Eat these types of food during meal times when your saliva production is at its highest; this will better help break up and wash away the leftover sugary and acidic bits of food.
  • Drink plenty of water during the day to wash away food particles that could be hiding between or around your teeth. This will keep your teeth fairly clean until you can floss and brush.
  • Avoid snacking between meals, when possible. Your saliva production fluctuates during the day, and it is low between meals. Low saliva production means it is easier for food particles to stick to your teeth and cause decay.
  • Maintain a balanced diet with proper amounts of fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, and proteins.
  • Continue regular dental hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visiting the dentist regularly.
  • Discuss major diet changes with your dentist prior to making any changes. Our dentists will help you know if diet changes will influence your dental hygiene routine.

Having a properly balanced diet can help your smile stay healthy and beautiful for life; it can also help you avoid complex or damaging oral problems in the future. Please feel free to call or visit our practice for more information!
