DENTAL CARE 101

Everyone loves having a bright, healthy smile. But in the 21st Century, life is more hectic and people are busier than ever before. As a result, you might not spend as much time caring for your teeth as you should. It is easy to let your brushing and flossing slide, especially if you are in a hurry to get out the door in the morning, or are worn out from your day and ready to go to bed at night. However, a toothache or a cavity is a great reminder of the importance of routine dental care.

Let’s talk brushing. It is not the most complicated thing that you will do during your day, but there is more to it than meets the eye. First, your toothbrush needs to be in good shape. If the bristles are worn or flattened, or if you have had it for three months or more, it is time for a new one. Make sure that the head is small enough that you can reach every part of your mouth. When you brush, clean the fronts and backs of your teeth, along with the chewing and biting surfaces. Don’t forget to brush your tongue since it contains bacteria that cause bad breath, Brush your tongue from the back to the front.

Effective flossing is also important. You should start with 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around each middle finger, and hold one to two inches between your thumbs and forefingers. Curve the floss around each tooth, floss below, and then away from the gumline. Use a fresh piece of floss for each tooth.

You should brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. It doesn’t matter if you brush or floss first, as long as you do an thorough job of both. But keep in mind that regular brushing and flossing does not replace your regular trips to the dentist for cleanings and exams. If it is time for your routine checkup, or if you are looking for a dentist for your family, Dr. Ron Ranson would love to meet you.
